Day 26 to Santiago de Compostela

29 September 2023 Day 26 destination Santiago Cathedral - my last challenging 16 kilometers

You would think this would be an easy day and yes, I did savor it, each kilometer counting down to the goal line and Santiago, but my ankle somehow is screaming, and it was a difficult walk at approximately half of my normal speed. I don’t know if I restrained it or all of the pounding re-inflamed it, but it was quite painful

In order to try to avoid some of yesterdays traffic we got up and we’re out walking by 6":45 am when it was still dark out. It was awesome to be walking under the stars two planets and a full moon. We should’ve done this yesterday morning as well… headlamps were in order for safety, so as not to step on something, or into a hole and roll an ankle or step off the path into a ditch. First light came about an hour later at 7:45

Temperature was a wonderful 15°C only needed a T-shirt to start walking in today.

For the first time we set out walking before seven in the dark. we should’ve done this yesterday. It was excellent as they were very few, relatively speaking,, pilgrims walking. A headlamp was required as it was dark, in spite of the full moon, stars overhead, and the presence of Jupiter and Venus. Again it was an awesome start and I had forgotten how nice it was to walk before sunrise as our departures were ‘late’ relatively speaking. And at my youthful age I could care less if I were the last one out of the hostel.

I didn’t take very many pictures today simply because a lot of the vistas and scenes were the same as I’ve enjoyed daily all along. Additionally, I was focused on my ankle and foot placement, since I knew I had four hours of walking much of which would be on pavement with very steep descents into Santiago

At last! I know ‘I’ve got this’ from here but it was reallllllllyyyy slow going with my left ankle

A very emotional entrance to Santiago Plaza. I can’t begin to describe my feelings. there are simply aren’t words after my 3 1/2 week journey to describe reaching this moment. Yup it was tearful.

A guy saw me fumbling with my phone, trying to take a selfie and graciously agreed to take this picture. He arrived yesterday, and somebody helped him with a picture and agreed. It was a very emotional arrival beyond words. Thank you, friend.

Out of the blue as I wandered around dazed on this huge plaza, Ellen came up behind me, said hello, and we gave each other a hug. To see someone I knew at this endpoint was so awesome. Thank you Ellen! (Holger was in church service and yes he saw the ‘holy bim-bam swing!). She had to runoff and catch a bus for Finisterre and the ocean!

I have the same shot from two years ago

A great moment of triumph for both of us! We reminisced over the physical intensity of walking the Primitivo and debated comparisons of the efforts on the Frances (where we met on Day One at Albergue Borda two years ago, September 2021). Both Caminos were very different qualitatively, and had different ‘energy’ as Holger puts it but both still had the common thread of this thing called pilgrimage and the friendship embodied.

The jubilant feeling couldn’t possibly be summed up better than this video I took of Holger.

And my Compostellae. I was offered, and also accepted a separate beautiful certificate of total mileage and documentation of partial completion of the Norte for future reference and continuation. My official mileage was 400 km on the Norte and 325 km, completing the Primitivo in its entirety from Oviedo (I think my cycling added up to a bit longer distance)

As you can see, Spain offers many many routes, all leading to Santiago and for those wondering or asking will I come back and do it again -all I can say is I never did finish the Norte all the way to Santiago, did I?

Highlight of the day: Making it to Santiago by both bicycle and foot and getting my mileage ‘Compostela’ at the Pilgrim office

What surprised me most? My emotions when I stepped onto Cathedral Square
